Based at a training camp in Austria, the Black Cats will take on a string of European opponents starting with Swiss outfit FC Stade Nyonnais on Monday 25 July.
Nyon is a quaint city 25 kilometres north of Geneva. With a population of just 20,000, it sits idyllically between the Jura Mountains and Lake Geneva, and it is best known for being the home of UEFA.
Stade Nyonnais play their football in ‘Liga Promotion’, the third tier of Swiss competition. They were unfortunate to lose their second tier status in 2012 after a reshuffle saw six teams relegated in the one season.
Nyonnais have already started their competitive season, losing 2-1 to SC Bruhl after extra-tme in a Swiss Cup qualifier on June 4. They will be looking to build on a steady campaign last season which saw them finish seventh in their respective division.
